The Thin Red Line is a three-hour fictional account of the American assault on Guadalcanal in 1942. Put that way, it’s so simple – but this may well be the most singular war film ever made. It was bound to be different, coming from Hollywood prodigal Terrence Malick, a director legendary as much as for his lyrical vision.
