Fantastic Posse transposes the “Joy” theme in the form of three monumental inflatable sculptures. Adopting an abstract and vibrant aesthetic, the installation appears in the form of a group(posse) of fantastic “creatures” that appear in the public space as a manifesto of joy.
Conceptually, the ensemble is built starting from the anecdote at the beginning of the speech This is Water (2005) held by the writer David Foster Wallace. :
Two fish swimming together meet an old fish swimming in the opposite direction. The latter greets them like this: “Neata, boys. How’s the water?”. The two fish swim more and more until, at one point, one looks at the other and asks in bewilderment, “What the hell is that water?” (personal translation)
At the heart of this anecdote, joy is not a rare emotion or a hard-to-reach destination, but a constant element that constantly surrounds us. It is a latent, invisible but essential state.
The choice of inflatable structures as an artistic medium derives directly from this metaphor. These cheerful “creatures” are shapes that come to life and gain volume exclusively through air. Beyond their imposing and friendly presence, the “creatures” hide a poetic truth: the air that fills them and gives them shape is exactly the same air in which they “swim” with us. The only difference between the public space and their volume is a thin and brightly colored membrane.
The installation thus becomes an invitation addressed to the public to stop for a moment, to interact with these forms full of vitality and to become aware of the “water” in which we all swim: a shared space where joy is always present and surrounds us at every step, just waiting to take shape.
