In the field of contemporary art and the creative industries, a crisis of mediatization, contextualization and reception is increasingly felt. Art journalism has either been restricted to niche publications, addressing a specialized audience, or is trying to adapt to social networks, which assume other codes, a more accessible language and various formats – text, audio, video or multimedia content. Specialized faculties and traditional editorial offices do not always adapt quickly enough to these transformations.

In short, the art market, media channels and public behavior are changing, but art journalism has not yet managed to reposition itself effectively. What is to be done? – the classic question.

RCW aims to open a debate with representatives of cultural institutions, academia, the press, the financial and political sectors, as well as professionals from the art market and creative industries, about the training and support of a new generation of journalists specialized in contemporary art.

What are the concrete solutions? How do we train and support those at the beginning of their journey? How can we create contexts in which arts journalism is relevant, accessible and sustainable? A common strategy is needed that offers, within a stable framework, opportunities outside of academia: scholarships, training internships, journalistic residencies, mentoring, sponsorships and funding for editorial projects.

Proposed topics:

• The art market and investment potential: how do we communicate about contemporary art? What is the role of the journalist between the artist, gallery, institution and collector?
• ⁠Strategies for attracting the general public;
• What professional perspectives does art journalism offer? Why would a young person want to train in this field? Is it still possible to build a sustainable career?
• ⁠Where can one write visibly and with impact about contemporary art? About the need for an editorial platform dedicated to art journalism;⁠ ⁠
• How can we co-interest state institutions and the private sector – banks, companies and organizations in related fields – to finance or sponsor training programs and editorial projects for beginners?
