O tragedie veninoasă O tragedie veninoasă

The Elizabethan playwright and poet Thomas Middleton (1580-1627), now staged for the first time in Romania, was one of the most prolific English playwrights of the 17th century, being dubbed “our other Shakespeare” by British critics. Middleton collaborated with Shakespeare on scenes from Timon of Athens, and after Shakespeare’s death Middleton was the only author to whom the Shakespeare Company entrusted Shakespeare’s plays for adaptation.
His most successful tragedies are The Changeling and Women Beware Women, first published in 1657.

Thomas Middleton’s play, staged by Silviu Purcărete, exposes a world deprived of morality, devoured by hypocrisy, revenge and manipulation, by carnal lust and wealth; a tragedy spiced with comic overtones, which manages to provide an accurate portrayal of a society hundreds of years old, a perfect mirror of today’s world.

Not recommended for young people under 16.
